Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn) is introduced as the son of Thomas Schell (Tom Hanks), and during Thomas' funeral, Oskar recalls his memories leading to this moment. As the film ends, Oskar goes back to the swing set in Central Park, where the scavenger hunt began. When he goes toward the specific swing that his father rode on when he was a child, he looks under the swing and finds a note from his deceased father, telling Oskar that he had completed his scavenger hunt before September 11 and saying that he finally conquered his fear of riding a swing. Oskar finally goes on the swing, and before he jumps, we see a freeze frame of Oskar on the swing.
